Stop Aiming to Hurt — Start Aiming to Disable

Martial arts often come with tradition, rules, and sport-specific limitations. Krav Maga is different. It was built for survival. Originating in Israel as a practical combat system, Krav Maga focuses on real-world threats — not competition.

At Kinship Self Defense in Pretoria, we teach Krav Maga because it works for ordinary people facing real danger. You don’t need years of training to benefit. You need direct, simple techniques designed to neutralize threats fast. If you want the full syllabus and class options, see our complete guide to self-defense classes in Montana.

In real violence, especially if you’re smaller, pain-based moves don’t cut it. You gotta break their structure, shut down their senses, and get away fast.

Hey — it’s your instructor here. I want to talk real with you about self-defense, especially for folks in Montana, Pretoria. When I first started teaching, I noticed a lot of people come in thinking it’s all about hurting the other person enough so they stop. But real fights don’t work like that. Especially if you’re smaller or not super strong, just causing pain isn’t gonna save you. You need to aim to disable your attacker: break their balance, mess with their senses, and get gone.

Below I’ll break down what I teach in class and what I’ve seen work on Pretoria streets.

If Someone Grabs You by the Throat: Break the Choke — Target the Thumbs

One thing I drill into everyone is how to handle a choke or throat grab. A lot of folks try to pull the attacker’s arms hard, but honestly, that wastes time and energy. The choke relies on their thumbs holding tight. When you can peel those thumbs off, the whole grip falls apart.

So what I teach is to drive your hands up and in and attack the thumbs with your fingers. It might feel strange at first, but that’s where the choke breaks fast. This is covered in our practical drills — see Train to Disable: practical drills.

I’ve had students — even smaller women — break free from much bigger attackers just by focusing on the thumbs. It’s not about muscle. It’s about hitting the right spot.

Forget Foot Stomps — Attack Soft Targets That Actually Work

Foot stomps feel good but often don’t stop someone who’s committed. If you want to make them pause long enough to escape, go for soft spots that mess with their nervous system and senses:

  • Eyes — gouges or rakes: mess with vision, cause panic.
  • Throat — chops or grabs: cut air, force them to cough or inhale sharply.
  • Groin / Knee — balance and control get disrupted; they stumble.

You’re not trading blows for points — you’re creating chaos in their system to break their function so you can run.

If you want to sharpen strikes and counters, our boxing for self defense page covers practical drills that translate to these targets.

Elbow with Purpose — Skip the Ribs

Most people think punching ribs will stop an attacker, but ribs are tough and many attackers keep coming. I teach elbows that hit where they count:

  • Upward elbow to the chin — snaps head back and can stun.
  • Rotational elbow to the jaw/temple — short, powerful, practical in tight spaces.

Elbows work in cramped, real-life situations. In class we practice these as part of our Krav Maga curriculum — see Krav Maga basics in Pretoria for the core concepts.

Break Structure: Balance, Base, and Direction

If you can remove someone’s balance (their base) and their directional control, they can’t coordinate an attack. That’s the principle behind effective escapes:

  • Off-balance with a short push or knee.
  • Change their centerline with a toe-tap or shin block.
  • Combine with a loud, aggressive cue (shout + movement) so witnesses notice.

This is less about strength and more about timing. We drill gross motor patterns that work under stress — the same drills are in Strength, Awareness, and Reaction Time.

Martial Arts in Montana Pretoria — What Actually Works Here

Around Montana Pretoria, schools blend Krav Maga, boxing, and practical combat drills. Flashy moves don’t work in a fight. What works is simple, brutal techniques that disable fast.

If you’re trying classes, I recommend testing both one-to-one and group formats — both have value. Read about the tradeoffs in Private vs Group lessons.

Fitness: Get Fit to Fight

Self-defense isn’t just techniques — you must be fit enough to use them. I help students build strength, speed, and stamina alongside technique work. Functional fitness (grips, hip drive, sprint capacity) means you’ll execute under stress.

We integrate conditioning so your body supports your brain under adrenaline. Want the science? Check how training rewires reaction time.

Women’s Protection & Focused Classes

Women face specific threats; that’s why our women’s protection classes focus on escapes, multiple-attacker scenarios, and everyday-object-as-weapon drills. These courses are short, intense, and practical — see Women’s Self Defense in Pretoria for more.

Practical Program Elements We Use

  • Thumb-first choke breaks (train until it’s automatic).
  • Targeted sensory disruption (eyes, throat, groin).
  • Short-range strikes (elbows, knees, palm-heel).
  • Environmental use (backpacks, doors, cars).
  • Fitness blocks to build the engine to run/fight.
  • Scenario training to make your body remember under stress.

All these pieces are present in our Train to Disable lessons and our practical Krav Maga sessions.

Community Workshops & Where to Start

We run community workshops and beginner sessions to introduce the basics — if you’re unsure, join a workshop to sample the drills. For details on local classes and what to expect, start with our first class guide and the Complete Guide to classes in Montana.

If you want to know costs and package options, we discuss that honestly in The Cost of Self Defense Training in Pretoria.

My Final Word (straight talk)

If you think self-defense is about hurting someone until they stop, you’re missing the point. I teach you to disable: peel thumbs on chokes, disrupt sight and breathing, hit with short, lethal tools (elbows, knees), and then get gone. Combine that with fitness and the right mindset, and your chances of escaping a violent encounter go way up.

Remember: target what controls their body, cause chaos, and get away. That’s how you win in real life.
